By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was a song written by the great songwriter Jimmy Webb that was made famous by former Wrecking Crew guitarist Glenn Campbell. The song was covered by Isaac Hayes, producer, session musician and songwriter extraordinaire, who in the mid 60s he penned hits for Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, before he became a successful solo artist in his own right. Hayes emphatically covered this song on his seminal album "Hot Buttered Soul", putting in an unforgettable 8-minute-long introduction monologue to the track.

Despite the success of the 60s and early 70s, Stax went bust in the late 70s and sold their famous 'Soulsville USA' studio (which Hayes was famously photographed outside of) and sadly, the building was later demolished. However, when we visited the location in 2002, the studio had been faithfully recreated to house the new Stax Museum of American Soul. We were a year too early to go in, given the history of the aforementioned track and because of the long journey we'd taken to get to Memphis, it only felt right that this picture should be called "By the Time I Get to Memphis
