There's something quietly symbolic about a gas station. It's a place you rarely remember until you need it.

This photograph was taken in rural Texas in 2002, somewhere between Dallas and the Oklahoma border. What caught my eye wasn't the pumps, but the sign: $1.25 a gallon. Coming from Britain, where petrol costs well over three times as much, it seemed almost unbelievable. We had arrived in the heart of America's oil country, where fuel was as much a part of the landscape as the endless highways themselves.

The title comes from Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth. Despite its reputation as a protest anthem, the song isn't really about offering answers. It's about paying attention—about recognising that something significant is happening, even if you can't quite define it.

That feeling stayed with us. A few miles later, in 128-degree Texas heat, our old Cadillac—Rufus—overheated and rolled to a stop. A split radiator hose threatened to end the journey until my brother sacrificed his bright yellow Tommy Hilfiger shirt, tearing it into strips to patch the leak. Twenty minutes later, we were back on the road, heading north.

Road trips are often remembered for the great destinations, but more often it's the small moments that endure: a roadside gas station, an impossibly cheap fuel price, a shirt turned into a repair kit, and another story added to the journey.
