About the Photo

An elevated highway cuts through the heart of New Orleans, rising above the city streets towards the Superdome—the iconic stadium that has hosted some of America’s biggest sporting events, including the Super Bowl. Beneath the concrete structure lies Gravier Street, a road that became one of the many symbols of devastation during Hurricane Katrina, when the surrounding neighbourhoods disappeared beneath floodwaters.

The title pays homage to the blues tradition that runs through the soul of New Orleans, while also acknowledging one of the city’s darkest chapters. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina brought catastrophic flooding to the Crescent City after the levees failed, leaving around 80% of New Orleans underwater and causing widespread destruction. The Superdome, normally a place of celebration and spectacle, became a “shelter of last resort” for thousands of displaced residents as the city descended into chaos.

The enduring image of Katrina was not only the damaged Superdome itself, but the landscape around it: flooded streets, submerged highways and a city temporarily transformed by the power of nature.

Yet New Orleans has always been defined by resilience. The same streets that witnessed tragedy have continued to echo with music, culture and survival. Many musicians left after Katrina, but others stayed—including Fats Domino, who refused to abandon his home in the Ninth Ward despite the rising waters.

Like the blues itself, this photograph holds both sorrow and hope. Gravier St Blues is a reminder that cities, like songs, carry their scars—but they keep playing.
