About the Photo

Rufus, our 1982 Cadillac Eldorado, was built for comfort, style and the open road—not for sleeping in. Beneath the fading glow of an American truck stop, the once-opulent luxury coupé became an unlikely bedroom as we attempted to find a few hours of rest during the height of an American summer.

We had fallen in love with Rufus the moment we discovered him in Chicopee: a maroon-coloured Cadillac with wire wheels, rich brown leather seats and the unmistakable presence of a car designed in an era when American automobiles were built on a grand scale. Slightly rough around the edges and carrying the lingering scent of another time, he was still an Eldorado—a status symbol, a dream car, a machine that represented success and possibility.

But somewhere outside Baltimore, the reality of life on the road collided with the fantasy.

In Britain, even the hottest summer days usually give way to cooler nights. In America, particularly further south, the heat lingers long after sunset. The Cadillac’s beautiful leather interior, designed to transport passengers in luxury, quickly transformed into a sealed furnace. With no other option, we tried to sleep as the temperature rose, the windows fogged, and the constant roar of the nearby interstate provided the soundtrack to our uncomfortable night.

Eventually, exhaustion took over, and we drifted into the “land of nod”, despite the oppressive heat and the endless white noise of passing traffic. A few hours later, the first light of morning exposed the reality of our surroundings. We woke drenched in sweat, our bodies stuck to the leather seats, the windows completely steamed over. Slowly peeling ourselves away from the upholstery, we began to understand exactly where we had spent the night.

A forest of eighteen-wheelers surrounded us in a grimy truck stop on the outskirts of Baltimore. When Jeremy opened the door to escape the heat, he was met not with fresh air but with a carpet of discarded beer cans, used condoms and hypodermic needles scattered across the asphalt. The sound of the highway hissed in the background as the realisation slowly sank in: perhaps sleeping overnight beside the interstate in one of America’s most dangerous cities had not been our smartest decision.

Thankfully, nobody disturbed us. Perhaps Rufus looked more suspicious than the long-haul truckers parked around us.

The title comes from Nelly’s 2002 summer anthem Hot in Herre, a song that dominated American radio during the same summer we travelled across the country. Alongside hits like How You Remind Me by Nickelback, A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton, and Complicated by Avril Lavigne, it became part of the soundtrack of a particular American moment.

This photograph captures the contrast at the heart of the journey: the glamour of the Cadillac Eldorado versus the uncomfortable reality of life inside it. Rufus represented the American dream—luxury, freedom and endless horizons—but the road revealed a different story. Sometimes the adventure is not found in the perfect moments, but in the strange, uncomfortable and unforgettable nights along the way.
