About the Photo
The final resting place of Rufus, our 1982 Cadillac Eldorado, lies among the twisted metal and forgotten machines of a scrapyard. Once a symbol of American optimism, excess and possibility, this once-grand automobile has been reduced to its final form—a shell of chrome, steel and memories waiting to be reclaimed.
Rufus was never just a car. He was our companion, our travelling home and a character in the journey behind Losing Eldorado – Searching for the Soul of America. Together, we crossed thousands of miles of American roads, following the music, myths and stories that shaped our understanding of the country. He carried us through cities, deserts, highways and forgotten towns, becoming a connection between the America we imagined and the America we discovered.
The title comes from The Beatles’ 1970 song Let It Be, a meditation on acceptance, uncertainty and finding peace in moments of darkness. Written during a period of turmoil and change for the band, the song offers a simple message: sometimes, when things cannot be saved, the only answer is to accept, release and move forward.
The image also reflects a wider truth about the American dream itself. The Eldorado was named after El Dorado, the mythical city of gold—a symbol of endless possibility and the search for something greater. But every dream has an ending, and every journey eventually reaches its final destination.
Standing among the remains of other discarded machines, Rufus represents both loss and gratitude. The end of the road is not simply destruction; it is part of the story. The miles travelled, the places discovered and the memories created remain long after the engine falls silent.
As the song whispers: “There will be an answer, let it be.”
This photograph is a farewell—not just to a car, but to a chapter of the journey. A reminder that everything passes, everything changes, and sometimes the only thing left to do is let it be.
