About the Photo
A solitary office worker pauses high above Boston, looking back towards the camera as the city's skyline rises behind him. Below, the streets are consumed by the enormous scale of the Big Dig — one of the most ambitious and controversial infrastructure projects in American history — where highways, construction sites and concrete channels reshaped the heart of the city.
During our time in Boston, every journey through the city was slowed by the endless disruption of the Big Dig, the hugely over-budget and troubled project that buried Interstate 93 beneath downtown Boston. Navigating this urban maze in a vintage 1982 Cadillac Eldorado was a challenge, turning even the simplest journey into an adventure. By the time we left Massachusetts, we were more than ready to move on.
The title is taken from the 1995 song Looking Back Over My Shoulder by Mike + The Mechanics, a song about loss, memory and the painful moment when something once familiar begins to slip away. Its lyrics capture that strange feeling of looking back at a place, a person or a moment in time and realising that things may never be the same again.
The image also echoes the biblical story of Lot’s wife, who, while fleeing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, looks back despite being warned not to and is turned into a pillar of salt. Her glance represents the human desire to hold on to what is already disappearing—the temptation to revisit the past, even when the road ahead demands that we continue forward.
Boston becomes a landscape of transition: a city rebuilding itself while confronting the remnants of its past. Like Lot’s wife, we found ourselves looking back—not out of regret, but with the awareness that every journey is shaped by the places we leave behind.
This photograph is a meditation on change, memory and departure: the moment when you turn your head one final time before continuing down the road.
