About this Photo

An 1982 Cadillac Eldorado sits alone beneath the harsh glow of a parking lot light in the vast emptiness of mid-Texas. Once a symbol of American ambition, luxury and optimism, the car rests in the quiet landscape of a changing nation—a relic of an era when bigger meant better and the open road promised endless possibility.

The Cadillac Eldorado was more than a car; it was a cultural icon. Its name comes from El Dorado, the legendary city of gold sought by European explorers—a mythical place representing wealth, discovery and the pursuit of dreams. For generations of Americans, the Eldorado embodied a similar promise: a golden age of prosperity, freedom and reinvention.

When we set out across America, we were searching for our own version of a musical Eldorado—the landscapes, sounds and stories that had shaped our imagination through blues, rock ’n’ roll, country, jazz and soul. We followed the highways and backroads in search of the places where these songs were born, chasing the spirit of an America that had been immortalised in its music.

But along the way, a question began to emerge: had this paradise ever truly existed, or was it always a paradise lost? Was the America we were searching for a real place, or a myth built from memories, melodies and dreams?

The photograph shares its title with Losing Eldorado – Searching for the Soul of America, a journey through the myths, contradictions and changing identity of the United States. The book explores the space between the America imagined through its music, cars and cultural symbols, and the reality discovered on the road.

Rufus, the 1982 Cadillac Eldorado that carried us across thousands of miles, became a character in that story—a reminder of a fading dream and a search for what remains when the promises of the past begin to disappear.

Standing alone beneath the Texas lights, this image captures the beauty and melancholy of that journey: a car built to represent arrival, still searching for the golden horizon that may have existed only in our imagination
