At first glance, these towering concrete silos seem strangely out of place in the centre of Chicago. Rising above the surrounding streets, they resemble the grain elevators that punctuate the American Midwest far more than the industrial heart of one of the world's great skyscraper cities. Yet their presence is entirely logical.
Concrete is the invisible foundation of Chicago. Every tower that defines its famous skyline, from pioneering steel-framed buildings to today's soaring skyscrapers, depends upon an endless supply of aggregate and high-performance concrete. Prairie Group has spent decades providing the materials that have shaped the modern Midwest, contributing to landmarks including Trump Tower Chicago and countless other structures that form the city's ever-changing skyline.
The title, Paris of the Prairies, recalls Daniel Burnham's bold vision for Chicago. Inspired by Baron Haussmann's transformation of Paris, Burnham imagined a city of grand boulevards, magnificent public spaces and monumental civic architecture that would inspire pride and become a symbol of the emerging American century. His enduring maxim, "Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood," still resonates across Chicago today.
Yet Burnham's magnificent vision could never have been realised without places like this. Before architecture becomes art, it is engineering. Before elegant façades, sweeping bridges and soaring towers, there is concrete.
There is an irony in these utilitarian structures. Their uncompromising functionalism echoes the philosophy later championed by Louis Sullivan's dictum that form follows function, standing in quiet contrast to Burnham's belief that beauty and civic grandeur should elevate everyday life. The concrete yard occupies the meeting point between those competing ideals: an industrial landscape whose purpose is purely practical, yet one that possesses an unexpected sculptural beauty of its own.
In a city celebrated for its architecture, this photograph is a reminder that the materials which make great buildings possible are rarely afforded the same admiration. Like grain silos transplanted into the urban core, Prairie's concrete towers are both incongruous and entirely essential—a hidden monument to the industry that built the Paris of the Prairies.
