Times Square, New York City

In 2002, Times Square was still a place where the past and future collided—a neon canyon of towering advertisements, Broadway marquees and the relentless energy of the city. From the passenger seat of Rufus, our 1982 Cadillac Eldorado, we cruised down Broadway, taking in the illuminated spectacle of the Great White Way in all its electric splendour.

The image captures two of America’s most recognisable icons side by side: Cadillac and Coca-Cola. Both brands represented a particular vision of American ambition—the Cadillac as the ultimate symbol of luxury, freedom and success; Coca-Cola as a global emblem of optimism, nostalgia and everyday Americana.

At the time, it was still possible to drive along Broadway through the heart of Times Square, creating a very different experience from today’s more pedestrian-focused streets. Sitting low behind the wheel of a huge American coupé, surrounded by the glow of neon and giant screens, felt like stepping into a movie.

We arrived in New York with a sense of wonder, unaware that we were witnessing the final years of a certain version of the city. Earlier that evening, we had travelled downtown to Nell’s, the legendary nightclub that had defined New York nightlife in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Once a playground for celebrities, musicians and fashion insiders—with events hosted by Vanity Fair and MTV—its owner, Nell Campbell was described by Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown as “the new style-maker of nocturnal New York.”

Like Times Square itself, Nell’s belonged to a changing era. This photograph captures a moment when old New York glamour, American excess and the mythology of the open road briefly met beneath the glow of the city lights.
