About the Image
The Devil’s Crossroads, Clarksdale, MS
“The Crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where Highway 61 bisects Highway 41, was the place that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil, or so we are led to believe. No one really knows where or exactly when Robert Johnson supposedly made his midnight pact with Satan to improve his guitar playing at the cost of eternal damnation. What is known is that around 1932 Robert Johnson disappeared for many months from the juke joint blues scene he was playing in, and when he returned, he was a very different guitar player from the one that had left. Like much of Robert Johnson’s short life (he was dead by twenty-seven in 1937), the exact crossroads where he had his late-night Faustian bargain is shrouded in mystery, but Clarksdale claims the spot.”
