"So Close Yet So Far Out" is the counterculture motto of the Austin Motel, Texas. The amusing shape of the motel's sign has earned it an amusing title from the locals: 'The Phallus Palace'.
We stayed a few nights in the Austin Motel back in 2002 and loved it. Austin is a great town, with an amazing live music scene, great food, captivating nightlife and a really laid-back hippy vibe.
When we arrived in Austin, we were sweaty, broke, and carrying a week’s worth of dirty clothes. A kind family at a laundromat near The Drag took pity on us, helped with the washing, and sent us to cool off at Barton Springs. Diving into that cold water in the middle of a Texas summer felt like salvation.
After a tip-off from some folk at Barton Springs, we checked into the Austin Motel, and we were dumbstruck by its neon signs, retro rooms, and classic Americana charm.
Later that evening, we headed out to Stubb’s Bar-B-Q and Dirty 6th Street, where Austin’s wild, musical energy came alive after dark....returning home in Rufus our '82 Cadillac Eldorado, I took this shot.
