“New York just as I pictured it, skyscrapers and everything” 

This piece of dialogue from Stevie Wonder’s iconic song “Living For The City” perfectly captures the feeling one has when you enter New York City by car for the first time. As you cruise down the highway, suddenly out of nowhere, a vast forest of pointy blue and silver-hued spires starts to poke above the rolling hills and tree-lined horizon. These edifices literally scrape the sky and grow dramatically in scale as you move closer to the city. It is a modern marvel and utterly breathtaking. New York was a city I had yearned to visit since I was a young child. When we arrived in July 2002, it was only ten short months since the Twin Towers tragedy. My brother Jeremy had visited New York twice before, once in 1983 as a three-year-old and then decades later as a twenty-year-old, at the start of the new millennium. The New York of 1983 was a very different animal to the New York of the year 2000, and 2002 was very different from two years previously. We did not know it at the time, but we would both get to know the city extremely well over the next ten years, as my brother would move there permanently in late 2003.

Many books have been written about the music scene that existed in New York from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s. Whole genres such as disco, hip hop and punk were born in the city around this time, but it was a period of mass upheaval and urban decay, despair and chronic criminality. The New York of the late 90s had seen a huge reduction in crime and regeneration of the urban fabric, and a change of financial fortunes for many people. Sadly, the events of September 11th 2001, affected the psyche of not just New York, but the whole world.
