On our last day, we decided to ascend to the summit of the city of St Louis, the most striking sight in town, the massive and incongruous Gateway Arch. Our visit to the arch was fairly uneventful, but as we drove out of the city, it became clear to us the greater significance of the structure and also the importance of St Louis in our quest to find the soul of America.
We slowly realised that St Louis’s story could be interpreted as a metaphor for modern America.
A once great city, it is now a town wrapped in faded glory. It was the birthplace of a plethora of musical greats such as Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Ike & Tina Turner, Fontella Bass, Albert King and Chuck Berry. The arch was erected in the 1960s to a scheme designed by Finnish Architect Eero Saarinen. The Gateway Arch was created as a symbolic monument to commemorate the expansion of the United States in the 19th century into the western territories. Dedicated to the Lewis and Clark expedition, the arch triumphantly celebrates St Louis’s position as the starting point of this journey and the symbolic gateway to the West.
